2017 Cabernet Franc No.27 Byo, Domaine Uby

2017 Cabernet Franc No.27 Byo, Domaine Uby
ref. UBY170 AUT19

Wine Variety: Although Cabernet Franc is among the most venerable of all Bordeaux's grape varieties, it now looks likely that its origins lie further south in the Pais Vasco, that region just across the Spanish border on the Atlantic seaboard. This is a very ancient variety and, with Sauvignon Blanc, is one of the parents of Cabernet Sauvignon. With climate change, its importance in the wines of Bordeaux is growing and plantings are increasing.

Wine Region: Gascony was once part of that region of south-west France known as Aquitaine, ergo under English rule for almost 300 years. It is here that the brandy Armagnac is produced.

Wine Producer: François Morel, owner and wine maker at Domaine Uby, is descended from wine makers, one Swiss, one local to Gascony and he's been steadily expanding the estate for a decade. A new winery with a design focusing on ergonomics was constructed here in 2012.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

I absolutely love everything about this wine from its colour in the glass – a deep, healthy-looking ruby with pink lights – to its stunning nose. Aromas start with distinct green pepperiness: a Cab Franc “tell”. Yet beneath, behind and beyond that is a wealth of blackcurrant, dry spice and dew-fresh bramble. After a few hours of breathing it relaxes into a blackcurrant and spice dominated set of aromas, rich and dark and a touch exotic. Palate commences pure and dark, exhibiting those blackcurrants again, gathering brambles and all that spice. There’s a profound minerality to the structure here. The tannins are a touch chalky at first, then swinging into a more upright register. A long thing, this; nicely fresh. I am both impressed and excited to find a wine of this quality available at this price.
