2018 Chinon Cuvée de Pâques, Domaine de la Roche d'Honneur

2018 Chinon Cuvée de Pâques, Domaine de la Roche d'Honneur
ref. HONN180 WIN19

Wine Variety: Although Cabernet Franc is among the most venerable of all Bordeaux's grape varieties, it now looks likely that its origins lie further south in the Pais Vasco, a region just across the Spanish border on the Atlantic seaboard. This is a very ancient variety and, with Sauvignon Blanc, one of the parents of Cabernet Sauvignon. With climate change, its importance in the wines of Bordeaux is growing and plantings are increasing.

Wine Region: Chinon is situated in Touraine in the middle Loire Valley. It is a largely red wine producer, with wines being made from Cabernet Franc (a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon is also permitted). A little white from Chenin and rosé from Cab Franc is also made. There are two styles here relating to two different soils: lighter wines from sandy, alluvial river soils and more sturdy and age-worthy reds from clay and limestone.

Wine producer: Stéphane Mureau is an 8th generation vigneron with an organic 20 hectare estate in the esteemed Loire commune of Savigny-en-Véron.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Colour is just medium-deep, pink-tinged ruby. Classic Cab Franc aromas of fine snap and precision waft up from the glass. Blackcurrant, very fresh fruit is overlaid by scents of currant leaf and lots of dry spice, along with a hint of green pepper. Palate is medium weight and cool with it. Again, there’s good snappiness to the fruit component, which includes the return of the green pepper. Tannin is fresh and piquant, cleans the tongue, has fine texture. Nice length and the texture turns chalky near the back. One to serve cold me’thinks. Archetypal example: direct, fresh and joyous.
