2016 Lagrein Dunkel, Bottega Vinai, Cavit

2016 Lagrein Dunkel, Bottega Vinai, Cavit
ref. VINA160 WIN19

Wine Variety: There are some very early mentions of a grape variety called Lagrein, but all refer to a white grape and it is unknown which modern-day variety these writings describe. Despite the fact that Lagrein is cultivated in the mountainous north of Italy, it does grow best in warmer soils. Its name is said to come from the Val Lagarina in Trentino and one of its parents in certainly Teroldego. Despite DNA analysis, its other parent remains unknown, although it is understood to be related to both Marzemino and Syrah.

Wine Region: Trentino, in Italy's mountainous north, has a much higher proportion of wines produced as DOC than any other region in Italy - an average of 80% of the region's wines have a DOC classification, compared to around 30% elsewhere in the country. Centred on the city of Trento, Trentino is the southern, Italian-speaking, half of the Alpine region of Trentino-Alto Adige. The summer weather here can be very warm and a huge range of wines - both red and white - are grown here from indigenous and international varieties.

Wine Producer: Cavit is a leading co-operative in the region. The winery began as a consortium of associated grape growers in 1950. Today, it unites 11 separate cellars and their combined 4,500 grape growers across 7,000 hectares of vineyard. Remarkably, Cavit accounts for 60% of this region's wine production.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

The colour of this in the glass is midnight right to the rim. First open, this wine displays a fair whack of oak, but after an hour or so, the wood has retreated; integrated into a hint of cocoa. The nose is quite dry, of very dark plums and not overtly pungent. There’s a note of dried herbs, but whether this comes from the wood or the fruit, I know not. As one would expect with this variety, there’s instant snap to the fruit. Acidity appears right from the front of the palate, the whole effect being one of zip and tang. Fruit of those dark plums, just picked and there on the cusp of bring under-ripe. Tannins are brisk, fresh, with good texture. A long wine, the finish becoming extremely juicy. Calls for really fatty food. A cut of lamb would be ideal.
