2018 Insolia Avro, Cantine Rallo

2018 Insolia Avro, Cantine Rallo
ref. RALL180 WIN19

Wine Variety:  Inzolia has been shown to be an ancient Sicilian grape variety that has, over the centuries, spread to Tuscany and associated islands. It's one of the ingredients in the fortified wine Marsala and in Sicilian still wines is often blended, especially with its partner in Marsala, Grillo, to which it is related. It also has genetic links with other Sicilian stalwarts, Frappato and Nerello Mascalese. There were 9,500 hectares of Inzolia in Italy in 2000, of which over 90% were in Sicily. However, vine acreage is waning.

Wine Region: Sicily is one of the formative wine producing regions of Italy. Settled by Greeks in the 8th century BC, it seems likely that wine and wine making techniques spread from there to the rest of the country; Pliny records that vines were transplanted to Pompeii in the 2nd century BC. Until recently, Sicily was largely a workaday vineyard, producing masses of blending wine that was sent up country and used to strengthen overly light wines made further north. However, investment has come into Sicilian wine production and mechanisation is growing, plus a number of figurehead wineries are pushing the boundaries of quality. This is a mountainous landscape and vines are planted up to 900 metres above sea level, at which height the torridity of the climate is largely avoided. The slopes of Mount Etna are increasingly exploited for the making of fine wine.

Wine Producer: Cantine Rallo is an organic producer working vineyards high in the hills above the town of Marsala, the altitude bringing cooler temperatures and therefore an increased level of freshness in the wines.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

This is quite boldly coloured in the glass. Then the nose welcomes the taster with its grapy spiciness that includes fresh root ginger aromas along with the scents of orchard fruits. The palate offers a really fresh citrus experience and revisits the spice found on the nose. More ginger and delicious orange-and-lemon fruit, within which lurks vibrant acidity and a pumice-textured structure. A long and lovely thing, this. Perfect on its own, as an aperitif or with fish and summer salads.
