2016 Mencia Joven, Bodega Cobertizo

2016 Mencia Joven, Bodega Cobertizo
ref. COBE160 SPR20

Wine Variety: Mencia is an old grape variety widely grown in the north of Castilla y Leon and Galicia. It has been shown to be identical to the Jaen grape that is cultivated in the Dão region of Portugal. Mencia produces deeply-coloured wines with good aromatics, and is sometimes used to make rosé wines. The plantings of older vines produce wines of greater intensity and age-worthiness.

Wine Region: Bierzo, the region from which this wine comes is almost as undervalued as the Mencia grape. Yet its star is now rising, thanks to the insightfulness of a handful of young producers. It has in its favour the fact that it lies between the excesses of the Atlantic climate to be found in Galicia and the dry, hot-one-minute, freezing-the-next conditions prevalent in Spain's central tablelands. It has potential, of that there is no doubt. Soils are generally granitic or schistous. Good things are afoot.

Wine Producer: Bodega Cobertizo is a small, family-owned and organic producer in the heart of the Bierzo region in northern Spain. They work 22 hectares of vineyards.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Deep and dark wine. Still looks young in the glass. It smells really fresh, of snappy, just-picked plums. And there's some of that varietal earthy/singed notes complicating the aromas. The palate offers more of that freshness and right from the front of the palate with its internalised core of lively acidity. This combines with a fine dust of tannin to support the deliciously pure very dark plum fruit. Nice length here. This does Mencia very well, I think.
