2018 Susumaniello, Boccantino

2018 Susumaniello, Boccantino
ref. BOCC181 SPR20

Wine Variety: Susumaniello is a deeply coloured red grape variety of Puglia, authorised in almost every province of that region. It can produce intensely-coloured wines that can be slightly rustic in structure but it is most often blended with other local varieties such as Malvasia Nera or Negroamaro.

Wine Region: Puglia is the long heel of Italy's boot, a flat and fertile region of Mediterranean climate. Much of Puglia is planted with table grapes but other vineyards produce fruit for vermouth production. Pretty much neck-and-neck with Sicily as Italy's second most productive wine region behind the Veneto, Puglia is responsible for a great deal of wine of average quality, but steps are being taken to promote it as a producer of quality wine. The name Puglia comes from the Latin for rainless.

Wine Producer: Boccantino is a brand within a much larger wine-producing company based in Bolzano in northern Italy. Under the Boccantino label they bottle wines from southern Italy, as well as Sicily and Sardinia

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

This new vintage sits richly red in the glass. Being a more youthful thing, the nose is a touch reticent, but swirling prompts earthy, nutty aromas to emerge: a rootiness that underpins the domestic fruit both red and black. It has really quite sophisticated structure in its lively acidity and nutty, supportive tannins. A long thing and a delicious one.
