2016 Eclipse, Gentilini

2016 Eclipse, Gentilini
ref. GENT160 SPR20

Wine Variety: Mavrodaphne is well-known around the world for its role in the production of a fortified sweet red wine. As with the white Dafni grape of Crete, its name relates to the Laurel or bay tree, mavro denoting black. Such is its colour and structure it is sometimes employed for adding intensity to wines from weaker grapes or vintages.

Wine Region: We're on the island of Kefalonia here: an island made famous by the novel and film Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Kefalonia lies in western Greece and was, for 400 years, part of the Venetian Empire. After the Napoleonic wars it was placed under British protection and finally united with Greece in 1864. It's a big island and wine has been made here for more than a millennium. A French vinous entrepreneur started commercial production here in the mid-19th century drawn, no doubt, by the rocky limestone soils and the cooling influence of Mount Ainos. It is the only Ionian Island to have its own "appellation of origin".

Wine Producer: Gentilini is based near the village of Minies on the island of Kefalonia. The vineyards are either situated on a high plateau, or the slopes of the imposing Mount Ainos, where they grow in limestone soils.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Just medium deep, with an interesting bluish ruby colour to it. The nose offers a delicious smelling creamy breadth of wild red and black plum fruit, along with a wealth of sweet spice and a wisp of smokiness. In the mouth, there’s a brief moment of richness before a wave of really firm, incisive acidity arrives and powers through the remainder of the very long palate. There’s something fractionally "sweet shop2 at the core here, but otherwise richly spiced, even a touch of pipe tobacco nuance to the fruit. Needs some fatty meat, but a long and lively mouthful.
