2019 Retsina, Tetramythos

2019 Retsina, Tetramythos
ref. TETR190 SPR20

Wine Variety: With no DNA analysis to date, untangling the web of clones and distinct varieties associated with the name Roditis is a near-impossible task. There are red-, pink- and white-skinned grapes in Greece called Roditis, the most common being the pink one. That itself has a number of different clones that grow in different ways and produce a range of wine styles... In any event, it is said that Roditis is susceptible to a virus that alters berry colour, which has the potential to confuse things yet further.

Wine Region: We're in the north of the Peloponnese here, in Aigialeia, which stretches south from the Corinth Canal into the mountains inland.

Wine Producer: Tetramythos is a boutique producer, working only 14 hectares of vines. Those vineyards are organic and lie between 600 and 1,050 metres above sea level.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

A really pale thing, this, in the glass. Aromas are very clean; so much so it seems rather amazing to think it the product of wild yeasts and amphora elevage. I can find orchard fruit scents of pear and apple and perhaps a hint of cold fermentation. All these clean fruits reappear on the palate, to be joined by a flavour like the breeze through a pine forest. Freshness is excellent and the structure assisted by a wisp of tannin. Long and satisfying, but I would drink this with some food. N.B. There is no vintage on the label, but it is 2019.
