2017 Torrontes Lazos Trio, Filus

Wine Variety: Torrontes... yet more ampelographic confusion! There are several unrelated vines going by the name Torrontes in South America and the Iberian peninsula. In Spain, it's just a mess, with different regions referring to very different grapes by this name. In South America there are three distinct vines grown under the name Torrontes, the three linked by them all having Muscat in their DNA. These vines are: Torrontes Mendocino; Torrontes Riojano (considered to be the finest of the trio and the one used for this wine), and Torrontes Sanjuanino.
Wine Region: Wine grapes arrived in Argentina via various routes in the 16th century. Mendoza is the largest and most important wine region of the country. The climate is dry, with vineyards being irrigated. This huge region, in the west of the country only a short hop over the mountains from Chile, has both low-lying and more lofty vineyards, and produces everything from jug wine to serious wines for the cellar.
Wine Producer: The owners of Filus - the Capone family - are Italian immigrants. Founded in 1997, Filus now has six properties totaling 150 hectares in different parts of Mendoza. Their Torrontes is grown in Cafayete.

Tasting Notes:
A lovely pale lemon colour with a hint of green about it. Nose has very good richness, yet some delicacy too. I can find varietal aromas of rose petals and spice with a hint of lychee, but none of it is overdone. There’s orchard fruit, too, in its suggestion of Golden Delicious apples. And there’s a wisp of rhubarb as well. The palate’s nicely dense, with a wave of Golden Delicious fruit through which comes a touch of piquant toasted spice. There’s that rose petal thing again. It’s a long thing that gathers a touch of structural bitterness that is entirely welcome. This is a good example of this occasionally tarty grape.
