2017 Aglianico del Vulture Terre di Orazio, Cantina di Venosa

2017 Aglianico del Vulture Terre di Orazio, Cantina di Venosa
ref. VENO170 SUM20

Wine Variety: Aglianico is a highly 'masculine' variety in many respects; the fruit is dark and potent. It is quite capable of producing extremely high-quality wines. Aglianico is an early-budding variety and ripens late, ergo it is best grown, as here, in a land of long summers. It has been argued that the name Aglianico is derived from Ellenico - Italian for Hellenic - as it was believed to have had its origins in Greece. However, this now seems extremely unlikely and it is now thought that the name is derived from the Spanish phrase "of the plain" (the Spanish occupied central Italy for a period in the 15th and 16th centuries).

Wine Region: Basilicata is that mountainous region that makes up the body of the foot of Italy, including a short stretch of coastline at the foot's instep and an even shorter one on the front of the ankle, sandwiched between Campania and Calabria. This is a poor region and the Basilicata vineyard boasts but a single DOC: Aglianico del Vulture.

Wine Producer: Cantina di Venosa was founded in 1957 and today has 400 grower members with 800 ha of vineyard. It is the largest producer of Aglianico wines in the Vulture area of Basilicata,  where vines grow on the volcanic soils from the local Mount Vulture.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Iron and blood and turmeric and hot sand come together with the red and black meaty fruit aromas. This is a rich thing in the mouth, yet it also has freshness from the very front. There are milk chocolate tannins in support. Great energy and snap here. It's long and fabulous, but quite a wild ride. Lock up yer daughters!
