2019 Muller Thurgau, Cantina Andriano
Wine Variety: The name of this variety comes from its creator, Hermann Muller, and the canton in which it was created, Thurgau; it is a cross, created in 1882, of Riesling and Madeleine Royale. It has been further crossed to produce a number of other varieties, perhaps the most famous of which are Bacchus and Ortega. Confusingly, Muller-Thurgau was previously thought to be Riesling crossed with Silvaner and later, Riesling crossed with Chasselas?! It's a thin-skinned grape that gets affected by various moulds but it is now very widespread in the vineyards of the world.
Wine Region: We are in the South Tyrol here: that Germanic, mountainous part of northern Italy. The village of Andrian lies on the banks for the Adige river at 285 metres surrounded by orchards and forests.
Wine Producer: Kellerei Andrian (or Cantina Andriano in Italian) is a co-operative founded in 1893. Since 2008 is has worked under the auspices of the brilliant Terlan winery.

Tasting Notes:
A pale, healthy colour leads to a vibrant nose redolent of fruits both citrus and orchard - oranges, tangerines, pears - highlighted by scents of summer flowers. Spice nuances the palate, where I find those citrus flavours I found as aromas on the nose i.e. orange; grapefruit. A fresh thing and one underpinned by constructive mineral structure. Long and clean and very lovely wine. Could sit around drinking this all evening...
