2018 Ruby Cabernet Strange Bru, Strange Kompanjie Unlimited

2018 Ruby Cabernet Strange Bru, Strange Kompanjie Unlimited
ref. STRA180 WIN20
On Sale

Wine Variety: Ruby Cabernet hails from a post-war California, a crossing of Carignan and Cabernet Sauvignon created at UCL Davis by Harold Olmo. Olmo wanted a grape that tasted like Cabernet, but could stand more torrid growing conditions.

Wine Region: Jan van Riebeeck named Swartland for the colour of a plant that is common here: the renosterbos (Elytropappus rhinocerotis, or Rhinoceros bush) that turns black (swart in Afrikaans) at certain times of the year. There are some old vineyards here, but quality wine production from Swartland is a relatively new thing. Swartland lies 50 kilometres north of Cape Town.

Wine Producer: All I can do is quote the importer's website here: "What’s this then? SKU is a casual band of happy ferments. A circus tent of the Cape’s stranger grapes and blends. We will champion the unfashionable, experiment with the known and express the found before it gets lost. Mistakes are likely, fun certain. Welcome to Strange Kompanjie, a Kultivar Club for the Underdog." Not sure we're any the wiser...

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

All but opaque purplish ruby with a very narrow band at the rim. Looks dense! Nose offers up scents of the darkest plums, comes across as quite dry, with a distinct hazelnut overtone. There are elements of spice here, too: spice that includes cinnamon. It’s a rich full palate that meets the tongue, loaded with spicy black fruit within which are housed the significant spicy tannins. And there’s that warmth from the alcohol at the back. This is certainly not one for the vicar. The tannin lies right through the palate, flavours it with nut-skins. The fruit is cool enough and nicely direct, but this needs food and big food at that.
