2012 Château de Juge

2012 Château de Juge
ref. JUGE120
On Sale

Wine Variety: Semillon is a relative of Sauvignon Blanc. Its origins are lost in the mists of time, although it does seem likely to have come from the Bordeaux region of France. By far its biggest plantings are in this part of France, where it is the main constituent of the sweet wines of Sauternes and Barsac. A pink-skinned mutation exists solely in South Africa.

Wine Region: Cadillac is a small appellation located in the Southwest of Bordeaux’s Entre-Deux-Mers region. It is named after the city of the same name, which was founded by the English in the 12th century, and which also lends its name to the famous car manufacturer (in honour of Antoine de la Mothe, who was born in Cadillac and went on to found the city of Detroit). The appellation was established in 1973, and is comprised of 21 communes on the right bank of the Garonne river. Soils are composed mainly of sand and limestone. The three approved grape varieties are Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle, though Semillon is the most widely planted due to its affinity for Botrytis cinerea.

Wine Producer: Château du Juge is located in the commune of Haux on one of the highest hills overlooking the Garonne. The actual château used to belong to Pierre Nicolas Rousse, a French pirate of some repute (the historical record does not make mention of whether or not he produced sweet wine when he wasn’t out pillaging). These days, the domaine is owned and operated by brothers Jacques, Jean and Marc Medeville. Grapes are hand-harvested in successive passes as rot develops, then fermented and aged in vats for 36 months before bottling. Average production is a little over 1500 cases per vintage.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Pretty lime-tinged lemon colour. Not the most aromatic of wines, this nevertheless gives up fascinating scents of toasted nut, lemon, apricot, apple and oranges. The palate offers a superb ripe weal of sweet pear and apricot fruit that fills the mouth with summery satisfaction. Perfectly balanced acidity and that toasted nut thing emerge at the end and clean the tongue ready for the next sip. Perfect for puddings or blue cheese…
