2019 Dolcetto d'Alba Roussot, Francesco Rinaldi
Wine Variety: Dolcetto is a very old variety of Piedmont in northern Italy. The name Dolcetto translates as "little sweet one" and refers to the apparent sweetness of the wine caused by the low acidity of the grape, rather than any sugar in the wine. It ripens a great deal earlier than its local peer varieties and is therefore planted on the higher and cooler sites.
Wine region: We are in the north west of Italy lying, as the name suggests, at the foot of the Alps. Piemonte was part of the Kingdom of Savoy. The greatest red wines of Italy - Barolo, Barbaresco and other Nebbiolo-based liquids - all come from here.
Wine Producer: The traditionalist estate of Francesco Rinaldi e Figli is located in the town of Barolo. It was founded in 1870, when Francesco Rinaldi inherited a vineyard and house in Barolo. One hundred and thirty years later, much of the same techniques are still used in the Francesco Rinaldi cellar to produce some of Barolo’s greatest wines. The estate is now run by Paola Rinaldi with help from her sister Piera Rinaldi.

Tasting Notes:
Really quite a pale pinkish tomato red. Fruit aromas are fresh and of blueberries. There’s a hint of liquorice and spring flowers. There’s some complexity here. Very much Pinot weight. Satin red fruits start you off. Cherry, principally. Then structure arrives in the form of crushed rock-textured tannins. There’s an airiness to this and a sophistication. Needs food. Lamb would be ideal. Freshly grippy thing. Nutty notes at the finish. Very good wine.
