2019 Kerner Classico, Cantina Valle Isarco

2019 Kerner Classico, Cantina Valle Isarco
ref. ISAR190

Wine Variety: Kerner - birthday was 1929, location southern Germany for this grape variety which is a crossing of Riesling and Schiava Grossa. It's named after a doctor who was prone to writing drinking songs.

Wine Region: We're in the Alto Adige in north Italy here, a mountainous region that only became part of Italy after the First World War and where German is the most widely spoken language. Space for vineyards is limited by the topography, although some of the best wines are from vineyards up to 800 metres above sea level.

Wine Producer: Located in the Valle Isarco, the most Northerly wine producing area of the majestic mountainous region of Alto Adige. Cantina Valle Isarco is one of the youngest cooperatives here, but has swiftly built a reputation for producing high quality wines of regional distinction. The Cantina was founded in 1961 by 24 members, at which time it was located in the cellars of Reinthalerhof estate. In 1975 they consolidated their resources to build a brand new, state-of-the-art winery, equipped with the latest technology and modern equipment. Today the Cantina is made up of 135 members, located across the valley on steep terraced vineyards, ranging from 300m – 950m above sea level.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

A beautifully clear thing in the glass, preceding a nose of great energy and vim, of fruits both orchard and citrus, all with a herbal nuance. Fresh herbs roll over and between apple and lime and small orange fruit. There's a light prickle of the palate; has been bottled with a touch of CO2. And the delicious fruit - orchard and citrus again - quickly gathers some pretty profound spice. Through it all comes firm, green orange acidity. This is a lively and very drinkable dry white wine.

#3wordtastingnote: herbs, orchard, spice
