2018 Braucol, Vigné-Lourac

2018 Braucol, Vigné-Lourac
ref. LOUR181 SPR21

Wine Variety: Braucol is better known as Fer Servadou, a vine very much identified with South West France, although a study of the plant's DNA suggests that it may originally have come from northern Spain. Fer Servadou is a grand parent of Carmenère. The "fer" of its title implies the vines wildness and suggests that it was domesticated directly from the wild. Research has shown that Fer Servadou is high in compounds healthy for the heart.

Wine Region: We're in Gaillac here in south-west France and a region the fortunes of which have fluctuated over its extensive history. Wine was being produced here in the 1st century AD i.e. long before Bordeaux. Barbarian invaders put paid to wine production, but it was revived by the church in the 16th century, with Gaillac wines being widely distributed and drunk throughout Europe. Wine production in Bordeaux hindered Gaillac's wine trade since the Bordelais placed a heavy levy on wines from "up-country". However, the region now has an expending vineyard area as wine makers from outside Gaillac - and, indeed, outside France - come to the region  to exploit the relatively cheap land.

Wine Producer: Alain Gayrel, owner of Vigné-Lourac, returned to his family's 9 hectare estate in 1975 and in the '80s started bottling his own cuvées, both red and white. In 1997 he bought the local co-operative and began buying grapes from local producers. The estate now runs to 240 hectares and from both fruit grown on the estate plus what is bought in, Vigné-Lourac now produces 1.5 million bottles annually.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Pretty colour: a deep, blue-ish ruby. Aromas here are patisserie-meets-sweet shop. Ripe and rich black cherry fruit, a hint of cola, a touch of liquorice. Raspberry, too. Entry is satin-smooth, of dark cherry fruit, but it quickly adds fresh tannins that rear upright, becoming nuttier and more incisive over the course of the long palate. It’s a fresh thing and finishes with a mass of fresh, mineral structure that’s slightly bitter. It’s very much a medium weight wine: barely that on entry. It needs some fatty food. A ragu of some sort would work.

#3wordtastingnote: cherry, nut, fresh
