2019 Auxerrois, Dengler-Seyler

2019 Auxerrois, Dengler-Seyler
ref. DENG190 SPR21

Wine Variety: You might have thought the name of this grape variety, Auxerrois, was an indication that it comes from Auxerre - i.e. Chablis country - but it doesn't; it's a reference to the old name for Alsace: Auxois. And this is yet another grape variety to have both Pinot and Gouais Blanc in its parentage, making it a close relation to Chardonnay, amongst many others. After Riesling, this is the most widely-planted grape of Alsace. Auxerrois used to be confused with Pinot Blanc: understandable given its ancestors. Some of South Africa's first Chardonnay vineyards were found to be Auxerrois.

Wine Region: The Pfalz is a region of growing importance in Germany, producing generally dry red and white wines from a diversity of soils that take in sand, limestone, basalt, volcanic  and sedimentary. Vineyards lie between the Haardt range of hills (the northern extension of the French Vosges) and the Rhein. In the south of the region a range of grape varieties are grown, including Pinots Gris and Blanc, Kerner and Muller-Thurgau. It is a region of experimentation and quest for quality i.e. keep an eye on it!

Wine Producer: Eva and Matthias Seyler run this family winery that has existed for 200 years. They are based in the south of the Pfalz and grow varieties including Chardonnay, Kerner, Silvaner, Pinot Blanc, Scheurebe, Riesling, Pinot Noir and Gewurztraminer.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Very pale in the glass: a limpid, green-tinged lemon. Nose offers up a welcome richness. There a nut aroma to the ripe pear fruit that also gives a hint of spice. There’s the merest hint of cold ferment in a wisp of sweetshop. The palate has really good richness; excellent density of ripe pear. And the spice returns, becoming more pronounced throughout. Acidity combines with the spice, has the cut of green fruits: limes, perhaps. There’s an almost chilli-like warmth to the fruit and structure. Delicious wine to drink on its own, or with various foods: white meat, salad. It has really excellent density at the back end and a super, textural finish.
