2019 Chardonnay, EMB

2019 Chardonnay, EMB
ref. EMB190 SUM21

Wine Variety: Chardonnay is the white grape of Burgundy, where it is responsible for all that region's finest wines. It is a grape of very modest aroma and flavour, making up what it lacks in those departments with its potential to become extremely richly textured. Chardonnay can cope with a range of climatic conditions and wine making techniques. Styles range from the crisp, acidic wines of champagne (where the fruit is essentially picked under-ripe), via the steely, mineral wines of Chablis, through the nutty, complex examples from the Côte de Beaune, to the (now seldom seen, hitherto ubiquitous) greasy, deeply coloured and over-oaked New World examples. Chardonnay is the shapely offspring of Pinot Noir and the highly promiscuous Gouais Blanc.

Wine Region: The Languedoc lies in south central France. Taking in the three départments of Aube, Hérault and Gard, it stretches from the Rhône in the east to the Roussillon (with which it is often associated) in the west. Here are planted something like a quarter of all French vineyards. Much of the wine produced here is non-AC i.e. the region is responsible for a great deal of what the Americans would call “jug wine”. Residents of the region at one time spoke Occitan, hence the name Langue d'Oc.

Wine Producer: This wine was bottled by a negociant firm called EMB.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Pale slightly steely lemon with the faintest green lights. Nose is extremely varietal i.e. not very aromatic, with faint whiffs of melon and pear coming off, as well as a touch of spice. I detect a hint of almond as well, along with something ever so slightly floral. The palate has very proper Chardonnay butteriness in its texture, but not in a claggy way. And there’s a fresh mineral structure at the core that leads to an acidic lift through the very long finish. A bit of spice reappears here and there. This is clean, but expressive, with super textural weight and excellent freshness. It does Chardonnay in spades, too.

#3wordtastingnote: clean, fresh, spice
