2019 Jacquère 'La Côte' Savoie, Domaine Vendange

2019 Jacquère 'La Côte' Savoie, Domaine Vendange
ref. VEND190 SUM21

Wine Variety: Jacquère is perhaps the most significant variety of Savoie, where it produces light, dry liquids that define the term "mountain wine". This grape variety is capable of producing  a great deal of fruit, thus it is known as Robinet (tap) in parts of Savoie. It is yet another offspring of Gouais Blanc (my, how that variety gets about) and curiously there are some plantings in Condrieu in the northern Rhône.

Wine Region: Savoie is an Alpine region abutting both Switzerland and Italy, producing wine where it can (i.e. mainly the foothills) from interesting, indigenous grape varieties. Two thirds of production is white. There is growing interest in these wines and vineyard area in Savoie is likewise expanding.

Wine Producer: Owners Diane and Benjamin began bottling their own wines in 2015, from vineyards that have been in the family for generations. Their 10-hectares of vines flourish on south facing slopes in Combe de Savoie, on the foothills of the Massif des Bauges. The estate is located on glacial moraines dating back 15,000 years, originating from the time when the valley was one large glacier. The vineyard is managed with great respect for tradition and terroir, using sustainable practices in order to gain the best and most authentic expression of the Savoie. The combination of rich soils and favourable climate provide Domaine de Vendange with excellent conditions for their vine nursery. The production process has been mastered throughout the generations, and they sell a vast range of scions and rootstocks throughout France.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Very pretty thing in the glass. It is extremely pale and the glinting straw is highlighted with emerald glints. Nose is clean and airy, with spice notes intertwining with the citrus scents of green orange, tangerine and pith. Not an especially aromatic wine, but what’s there smells delicious. Ooh, I do like wines like this i.e. low in alcohol, yet with real intent and direction. It’s a long thing and the apple acidity is held within, perfectly held in check by the elegant fruit. That fruit is itself really quite laid back, yet shapely. The palate ends on a burst of green apple acidic freshness. This is a perfect summer wine for sipping on its own for with lunchtime salads. A delight.
