2018 Colombard Sentiers du Sud, Cantalric, Cantalric

2018 Colombard Sentiers du Sud, Cantalric, Cantalric
ref. CANTNV0 AUT21

Wine Variety: Colombard comes from western-central France i.e. brandy country. It has been shown to be a crossing of Gouais Blanc and Chenin Blanc. It is one of the varieties used in the production of cognac and armagnac and, after a period in the popularity doldrums, it is now gaining in favour. It is popular in California for the production of cheap jug wine, being a high-yielding grape.

Wine Region: The Languedoc lies in south central France. Taking in the three départments of Aube, Hérault and Gard, it stretches from the Rhône in the east to the Roussillon (with which it is often associated) in the west. Here are planted something like a quarter of all French vineyards. Much of the wine produced here is non-AC i.e. the region is responsible for a great deal of what the Americans would call “jug wine”. Residents of the region at one time spoke Occitan, hence the name Langue d'Oc.

Wine Producer: Cantalric is a relatively new co-operative in the Languedoc. In 1976 three individual cellars united together to share their skills, technology and know how. Nowadays the organisation has around 250 growers with a total of 1500 hectares of land across 7 different appellations. Their vines stretch form the Alaric mountains in the Massif of Corbières to a corridor of valleys between Carcassonne and Narbonne. Their wines benefit from grapes grown in a variety of soils and climates offering concentrated, rich and varied styles, often highly original and typical of their varietals.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Lovely clear and clean wine on the nose, giving up wisps of flowery scents along with aromas of pear and white peach. The palate has super liveliness right from the off. The firm, incisive acidity scrubs the palate on its way through. There’s something earthy along with the orchard and citrus fruit. It’s decently long and would make an excellent solo quaffer.
