It’s easy to believe that American wine makers would like nothing more than to be based in France, making French wine. The most famous (and hugely expensive) wines of California, Oregon and Washington states are modelled very much on claret, burgundy and Rhône Valley wines and, yes, in many cases are highly successful.
Vitis vinifera, the wine grape, is indigenous only to Europe and the far West of Asia, thus there are no local grapes in the Americas. However, American grape varieties have had one significant and highly important role to play: they provided rootstocks onto which to graft Vitis vinifera, thus offering a remedy for the disaster that was the Phylloxera epidemic of the late 19th century. This aphid – now correctly named Dactylasphaera vitifoliae came close to destroying the entire European vineyard; grafting was the sole solution.
Due to its lack of autochthonous grape varieties, the US hasn’t a great deal to offer The Daily Drinker…but that is not to say it shouldn’t be investigated, of course!
