Died-in-the-wool Spanish variety, the name of which comes from the Latin verb to ripen. It's at home Catalunya, however an Andalusian grape called Vijariego Negra has now been accepted as identical and it was under this latter name that the grape was introduced to the Canary Islands. Almost all of mainland Spain's planting of this variety are now in Catalunya.
